It appears the days of laying on the beach for hours on end are definitely gone for us….confirmed by the fact that when we head to a destination where the former is possible, we still opt to work up a sweat on the trails rather than the sandy shores. The ‘Garden Island’ of Kauai provided just the right balance of challenging hikes/stunning vistas and postcard worthy beaches to meet our vacation needs. This said, a tad less rain and more sun would have been nice, but we managed to “weather” the many rainy intervals with a ‘Yahtzee’ marathon, accompanied by the odd cocktail.
Highlight of the trip for me, and I think dear husband too as an onlooker, was when I finally mustered up the courage to go snorkelling (yeah, yeah….I know, but you have to understand – I lost my ocean swimming mojo a long time ago!). So picture this….I’m floating around over the coral reef in about 4ft of water (about 15ft from shore), safe in the knowledge that my own personal lifeguard is watching closely…, relaxed and actually breathing through my snorkel, while watching the rainbow coloured fish flit around below me, when wouldn’t you know it – I’m blindsided by a massive shark – uh hum…I mean Turtle. But…if you were close by and paying attention, you would have thought it was a shark by the way I jumped up in a panic. T…T….T…..Turtle! – was all I could manage to yell to my lifeguard, while gesturing vigorously into the depths of the coral reef…a few feet away! Fortunately for me, lifeguard came promptly to the rescue and was armed with underwater camera, so I was able to get a quick capture of my new four-legged swimming buddy!
Almost all the images below were taken with our ‘Olympus Stylus – Tough – Shockproof/Waterproof’ point and shoot, this is because we were covered in water for most of the trip, regardless of whether we were in the ocean or on the trails! Highly recommend it!!!
